Duke Energy Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Index World List

Duke Energy’s environmental, social and economic performance earned it a place on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index announced today.

The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) comprises more than 300 companies identified as the top 10 percent of the leading sustainability performers among the largest 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index. In the electricity sector, 105 companies were evaluated for consideration as the top sustainability performers in their industry. Thirteen electric utilities from around the world were named to the elite World index. For the past four years, Duke Energy had been named to the DJSI for North American companies in the electric utility sector. Read more

Duke Energy Changes Focus of Coastal Wind Demonstration Project with UNC

Duke Energy Carolinas will no longer pursue a plan to place up to three demonstration wind turbines in the Pamlico Sound.

Instead, the company and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will refocus their collaboration to study and help enable large-scale offshore wind development on the ocean side of the North Carolina coast.

Since the project was announced in September 2009, in-depth analysis and engineering have been conducted. Duke Energy concluded that the fixed costs associated with permitting, design and construction of the small-scale coastal wind demonstration project were no longer economically viable. Read more

Duke Energy Begins Move into New Corporate Headquarters

Duke Energy employees will be on the move over the next couple of years — literally.

Many of them will begin moving across the street from their current corporate headquarters at 526 South Church St. to their new facilities at 550 South Tryon St.

The new building, owned by Wachovia/Wells Fargo, has assumed the name Duke Energy Center because the company is leasing approximately 500,000 square feet and will house its corporate operations there. The current Energy Center, which will primarily serve Duke Energy Carolinas operations, will become known as 526 South Church.

The corporation has designed its new corporate office space using Workplace of the Future (WOF) principles to provide employees with some of the most modern, efficient and sustainable working conditions in the country. Read more

Duke Energy Commercial Solar Power Project in Texas Secures Financing

For the second time in three weeks, Duke Energy announced the financing of assets in its commercial renewable power portfolio to help fund investments in additional clean energy projects.

Duke Energy Generation Services (DEGS), a Duke Energy Commercial Businesses unit that owns and develops renewable power assets, has raised approximately $45 million by leveraging its ownership of the 14-megawatt (16-megawatt direct current) Blue Wing Solar Project, currently under construction in San Antonio, Texas. Prudential Capital Group provided the 25-year loan. Read more

Duke Energy Reaches Agreement with DOE to Accept $204 Million in Stimulus Funds to Support Grid Modernization

Duke Energy has finalized an agreement with the Department of Energy for $204 million in stimulus funds to support smart grid projects in the company’s five-state service territory.

The DOE funds will support two projects: $200  million — the maximum allowed per project under the DOE Smart Grid Investment Grant Program — will assist in modernizing Duke Energy’s power distribution system; $4 million will support the installation of digital equipment on the transmission system in the Carolinas. Read more

Celebrating Earth Day and a New Solar Energy Project

On April 22, hundreds of people attended a celebration at the Environmental Protection Agency campus in Durham, North Carolina to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Earth Day movement. Jim Turner, Group Executive, President & Chief Operating Officer of US Franchised Electric and Gas operations addressed the crowd and joined an EPA official in cutting the ribbon for the new rooftop solar system on the campus. The system is owned and operated by Duke Energy. The site was one of ten additional solar sites named that day.

Duke Energy Extends Its Current Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Promotion

Due to the overwhelming response and success of its compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) promotion, Duke Energy today announced it is extending the expiration date of coupons offering a free six-pack of GE Energy Smart® 13-watt CFL bulbs after customers reported difficulty finding the product in stock. Duke Energy and Arbor Day Foundation Seek to Increase Participation in Paperless Billing

Duke Energy and the Arbor Day Foundation are encouraging Duke Energy customers to go paperless by receiving their monthly energy bills electronically instead of by mail.

If participation in the company’s paperless billing program increases by 100,000 customers in 2010, Duke Energy will donate $100,000 to the Arbor Day Foundation to thank customers for making the switch. Read more
