Cape Fear Plant Implosion - Aug. 22, 2014

On the morning of Aug. 22, 2014, Duke Energy’s Cape Fear Plant, located in Moncure, N.C., underwent a major transformation after serving the region well for more than 90 years. The company’s demolition specialist imploded the two 200-foot smokestacks at the site as part of an effort to decommission and demolish units at nine coal plants in North Carolina. The company plans to hold two additional implosion events at the site before the end of 2014. These events will take down the precipitators, which captured and collected fly ash, and the boilers.
