CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Duke Energy representatives deconstructed an outdated refrigerator today and revealed how customers can take control of their energy costs, earn extra cash and support a cleaner environment by having an old refrigerator or freezer picked up for recycling.
The "Filet-O-Fridge" demonstration shows how technology and innovation can save energy, create jobs and conserve natural resources. Participants in the program receive a newly increased $50 incentive, formerly $30, for recycling an outdated refrigerator or freezer.
During the deconstruction process, Duke Energy representatives revealed the variety of materials found in an outdated refrigerator and, more importantly, explained how their system repurposes those materials for future use. They also pointed out how Duke Energy customers can save up to $150 a year by retiring and recycling an inefficient refrigerator or freezer.
Older refrigerators and freezers use as much as three times more electricity to run than newer, more efficient models.
"Often these outdated appliances just end up wasting space -- both in your home and eventually in landfills," said John Langston, Duke Energy appliance recycling program manager. "This program provides our customers with the opportunity to have old appliances picked up for free, receive a $50 incentive and know that their unit is being safely and responsibly recycled."
Duke Energy residents can participate in the refrigerator recycling program by calling 1-855-398-6200 or visiting duke-energy.com/recycle.
The Duke Energy appliance recycling program reclaims up to 95 percent of each refrigerator, repurposing materials such as plastic, glass and metal for future use.
