RALEIGH, N.C. - Twenty-six local high school graduates earn Progress Energy Carolinas scholarships. Progress Energy Carolinas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, awards the scholarships annually to qualifying college-bound children of company employees. Criteria used to select recipients include academic record, leadership abilities, potential to succeed, work experience and participation in school and community activities.
Merit Award scholarships are worth $1,500 per year and renewable annually toward study at an accredited four-year institution. Twenty-four students received Merit Awards.
The Merit Award scholarship recipients are:
- Alexandra Baltezegar, a recent graduate of E.A. Laney High School and the daughter of Keith and Kimberly Baltezegar. Alex plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and will major in English and political science with a minor in secondary education.
- Marshall Cotton, a recent graduate of New Hanover High School and the son of Stephen and Ruth Cotton. Marshall plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will major in biomedical sciences.
- Zachary Coutant, a recent graduate of Holly Springs High School and the son of Richard and Kendi Coutant. Zachary plans to attend NC State University and will major in mechanical engineering.
- Christopher Donaldson, a recent graduate of Cornerstone Academy and the son of Bob and Sherry Donaldson. Christopher plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will major in business.
- John Eckert is a recent graduate of Thomas Sumter Academy and the son of Frank and Kin Eckert. John plans to attend the University of South Carolina at Columbia and will major in pre-pharmacy.
- John “Michael” Gray, a recent graduate of Wakefield High School and the son of John and Penny Gray. Michael plans to attend NC State University and will major in math and economics.
- Christine Guseman is a recent graduate of South Brunswick High School and the daughter of David and Dianna Guseman. Christine plans to attend NC State University and will major in civil engineering.
- Sharidan Hill, a recent graduate of Wake Christian Academy and the daughter of Tim and Sharon Hill. Sharidan plans to attend Campbell University and will major in pre-medicine/biology.
- Micah Jones is a recent graduate of Riverside High School and the son of Reuben and Marion Jones. Micah plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will major in public policy and Russian with a minor in Spanish.
- Kristen Krebs, a recent graduate of Holly Springs High School and the daughter of Andy and Laurie Krebs. Kristen plans to attend Clemson University and will major in communications.
- Sarah “Ruth” Major is a recent graduate of Pine Crest High School and the daughter of Neil Major and Sarah Bumgarner. Ruth plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
- Jack Meier is a recent graduate of Chatham Central High School and the son of John and Susan Meier. Jack plans to attend Wake Forest University and will major in English and biology.
- Cortney Roberts is a recent graduate of Montgomery High School and the daughter of Thomas Roberts and Kristen Schultz. Cortney plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and will major in statistics.
- Keri Roeder, a recent graduate of John T. Hoggard High School and the daughter of Michael and Teena Roeder. Keri plans to attend Wingate University and will major in education.
- Lawrence Sandifer is a recent graduate of Southern Nash High School and the son of Chris and Sally Sandifer. Lawrence plans to attend Clemson University and will major in business.
- Shreya Shah, a recent graduate of Cary High School and the daughter of Ashish and Deepa Shah. Shreya plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will major in pre-medicine.
- Samuel Stephenson, Jr. is a recent graduate of West Johnston High School and the son of Sam and Wendy Stephenson. Samuel plans to attend NC State University and will major in biomedical engineering.
- Corinne Tabor, a recent graduate of New Hanover High School and the daughter of Steve and Fran Tabor. Cori plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will major in psychology.
- Harrison Taylor is a recent graduate of Heritage Academy and the son of Scott and Valerie Taylor. Harrison plans to attend NC State University and major in nuclear engineering.
- Cameron Tuck is a recent graduate of Person High School and the daughter of Terry and Kim Tuck. Cameron plans to attend NC State University and will major in chemical engineering.
- Anita Tyndall is a recent graduate of East Wake Academy and the daughter of Ken Tyndall and Sue Hardison. Anita plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and major in sign language interpretation.
- Rebecca Volk, a recent graduate of Holly Springs High School and the daughter of Sam and Nancy Volk. Becca plans to attend Syracuse University and will major in magazine journalism.
- Johanna White, a recent graduate of E.A. Laney High School and the daughter of Ronald and Patricia White. Johanna plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will major in sports training.
- Matthew Wyckoff, a recent graduate of Ravenscroft School and the son of Brad and Sandy Wyckoff. Matthew plans to attend Lehigh University and will major in business.
Two students earned the Bob McGehee Memorial Scholarship, worth $1,000 per year and renewable annually for study at an accredited two-year institution. The McGehee Scholarship is named for the late Progress Energy Chairman and CEO Bob McGehee. The recipients are:
- Ashley Clemmons, a recent graduate of Coastal Carolina Christian Academy and the daughter of Russell and Caroline Clemmons. Ashley plans to attend Cape Fear Community College and will major in medical sonography.
- Brandon Hughes is a recent graduate of Halifax County High School and the son of Andy and Beverly Hughes. Brandon plans to attend Piedmont Community College and will major in electrical power production technology.
